Kate Jenkins Knits for Hermès and Prepares for Italian Exhibition
Crochet artist Kate Jenkins has created a whimsical display for Hermès, featuring hand-knit objects that celebrate the brand's equestrian heritage. As she prepares for her upcoming exhibition, Kate's Knitalian, she reflects on her creative journey and the importance of handmade artistry in fashion.
Kate Jenkins, a British crochet artist, recently completed an exciting project for Hermès, hand-knitting a variety of whimsical objects for a horse salon. This unique collaboration has not only showcased her artistic talent but also brought her work to a broader audience. Jenkins was thrilled when Hermès invited her to design the opening windows for their flagship store, an opportunity she describes as a dream come true.
Her installation featured knit Birkins filled with knit carrots and bottles of ‘Shampoony’ and ‘Dark Horse hair dye,’ humorously reflecting the brand's equestrian roots. She expressed the challenge of balancing humor with the luxury brand's identity, stating, "I told all the guys at Hermès it was like I went into character, like I was method acting: what would I want if I’m a horse and go into a hair salon?" This playful approach resonated well with audiences, making the installation a hit.
Although the Hermès project pushed back her upcoming exhibition, Kate’s Knitalian, to late October, she is excited about the new venture. This exhibition will transform the London Air Contemporary Gallery into an Italian-themed restaurant and deli, featuring nearly all hand-knit objects. Jenkins is currently busy creating a small mountain of Italian-inspired items, including cheese and salami, while ensuring the colors are just right, such as finding the perfect shade of yarn for Parmesan.
Jenkins’ career began in fashion, where she worked as a freelance knitwear designer for notable brands like Marc Jacobs and Ralph Lauren. However, she found her passion in creating intricate crochet art, which has now come full circle with her latest projects. Reflecting on her experience with Hermès, she noted the value of craftsmanship in fashion, stating, "They really appreciate and value craftsmanship. Hermès wants people to see beautiful, real things made by a human being. Everything is considered."
As she looks to the future, Jenkins is eager for new collaborations and has her sights set on working with brands like JW Anderson and Chanel. Her enthusiasm for knitting and creativity shines through in her work, demonstrating the magic of transforming simple yarn into captivating art.
Upcoming Exhibition: Kate's Knitalian
With her upcoming exhibition, Jenkins aims to push the boundaries of her craft further. She is driven by a desire to best herself with each new installation, and the Italian restaurant concept has been a long-standing idea. By researching various food items and their visual appeal, she hopes to create an immersive experience that captivates visitors.
As she continues to explore the intersection of fashion and art through her knitting, Jenkins exemplifies how creativity can thrive in unexpected ways. Her work not only highlights the artistry of knitting but also invites viewers to appreciate the intricate details and humor woven into each piece.

As she prepares for her exhibition, the knitting community eagerly anticipates what she will bring to life next, reminding us all of the beauty and joy that can be found in handmade artistry.
